They’ve got four number one singles in the United Kingdom, two Top 10 on Billboard Hot 100 and a Grammy: The e-music trio Clean Bandit is coming to Brazil! The british group is bringing the “What Is Love?” album tour to São Paulo on February 1st and Porto Alegre, Planeta Atlântida Festival, on February 2nd. The album has the top hits “Rockabye”, “Symphony”, “I Miss You” and “Solo”, all platinum.
Prior to their arrival, Clean Bandit’s Jack Patterson spoke to POPline over the phone to talk about the band’s first visit to Brazil. During the conversation, he also answered few questions about their collaboration with Elton John – that didn’t make it to the album – and their wish to work with brazilian superstar Anitta.
POPline: You guys are about to come to Brazil. Are you excited?
JACK: Very excited! We get so much love from brazilian fans online, so we are very excited to get there, see everyone and make a big party!
Is there anything you want to do here, in your free time?
Yeah! We always try to explore the city and get to know the local cuisine and new music. We are going to try to see as much as we can.
What can we expect from the new tour?
Next year, we are having a totally different show with songs from the album “What Is Love?”. We are very excited to play these songs live for our fans.
At the moment you’re promoting the new album and in February you’re starting the tour. Are there any holiday plans in the meantime?
Yeah, a little holiday. On the New Year’s we are going to Asia, for a concert in Bali, Indonesia, and after that we have a few weeks off. We’re going to enjoy them!
The album has a lot of hits and number 1 UK singles, but which one of them is the fan favourite on shows?
People love “Solo”, with Demi Lovato. Recently, we’ve started playing “Baby”, our collaboration with Marina, and by the reaction we get, I guess people like it a lot. We’ve already played it a couple of times.
But now, tell me the truth… Have you ever got bored of any of your songs after playing it so many times?
Haha Yeah! I was bored of “Rather Be”. A little bit, but I already love it again! At the time, we only had one big hit, so you can imagine… Now we’ve got other songs, so it’s more varied and I love “Rather Be” again!
And what are your favourite songs to play on shows?
Now “Rather Be” is one of them, because I play it on the piano, but I also love “Baby”, because there’s a guitar and I love it.
You’ve just released “Baby” as a single. Are you planning to promote any other single from this album or are you putting out new music in 2019?
I guess we are going to do both. We want to do both things. We are working on new material that we cannot wait to show you guys. But we also want to work on a few more songs from this album, so we don’t lose them.
Would you like to make a video for any of these songs?
I guess maybe “Playboy Style”, with Charli XCX and Bhad Bhabie. I think the video would be very interesting and it would be cool to meet them and shoot it too.
You guys made a song with Elton John that didn’t make it to the album. Will we ever be able to listen to that some day?
We didn’t discard the song. It’s not finished yet and that’s why it didn’t make it to the album. But I hope you’ll be able to listen to it very soon.
And what can you tell us about this song?
It’s a very special song for us, really. It’s taking long because we want it to sound perfect when you listen to it.
We saw Clean Bandit sending messages to Anitta over the internet. Did you manage to get in touch with her?
I think Grace met her in a festival… We expect to see her very soon. We are huge fans of her work.
Can we expect a collaboration?
I hope so! We’re ready for it!
Are you planning to meet her in Brazil?
We might see her, if she’s there when we arrive. We are going to invite her to come to our show.
Thank you for the interview, Jack. Could you leave a message for your brazilian fans?
Guys, we love you! We always see your comments online and we are very excited to meet you. We are going to make a wild party! It’ll be great to see you in 2019.
